Gregor Townsend has made three changes to the side that opened the Nations Championship with a seven-try victory over Argentina as Scotland prepare for a daunting trip to Pretoria to face the world champion Springboks.
The headline news is the return of Finn Russell, who comes back in at fly-half after recovering from the calf injury that ruled him out of the opening weekend. Zander Fagerson also returns to the starting XV following Elliot Millar Mills’ tour-ending injury in Córdoba (that saw Zander play for probably longer than was planned with this weekend’s game in mind), while Gregor Brown is rewarded for his display off the bench against Los Pumas.
Fagerson joins Pierre Schoeman and Ewan Ashman in an otherwise unchanged front row. Schoeman and Scott Cummings both celebrated their 50th caps with tries in Argentina, and Cummings continues alongside Brown in the second row after the Glasgow lock also marked his appearance with his first Scotland try.
The back row remains untouched, with Matt Fagerson, Rory Darge and Jack Dempsey continuing as a settled unit. Darge was once again at the heart of Scotland’s defensive effort last weekend, topping the tackle count in Córdoba.
Russell links up with Ben White at half-back, restoring Scotland’s usual first-choice pairing for what will undoubtedly be their toughest assignment of the championship.
Outside them, Rory Hutchinson keeps the number 13 jersey after one of his best performances in a Scotland shirt, including a well-taken try against Argentina. He again partners captain Sione Tuipulotu in midfield who put in a powerful carrying performance and his physicality will be needed again.
The back three remains unchanged, with Kyle Steyn and Jamie Dobie continuing on the wings and Kyle Rowe at full-back. Townsend continues to favour Dobie as a wing option, suggesting his versatility and work rate remain highly valued despite more specialist finishers being available.
There is another milestone in waiting on the bench, where Rory Sutherland is in line to win his 50th cap if called upon. Gregor Hiddleston retains his place after an assured debut against Argentina, while Alex Samuel also remains among the replacements.
Tom Jordan drops to the bench following Russell’s return, with the hefty lineup of Will Hurd, Josh Bayliss, Magnus Bradbury and Stafford McDowall all set for their first appearances of this year’s Nations Championship should they be called into action.
After an encouraging start in Córdoba, Scotland now face a very different challenge against a team who put England comfortably to bed within the opening twenty minutes and never really looked challenged much after that. Winning in South Africa remains one of the toughest assignments in world rugby and with Scotland rising to a record 5th in the World Rankings, this weekend should show how big that gap really is.
