Pierre Schoeman and Scott Cummings will both bring up their 50th Scotland caps on Saturday as Gregor Townsend names an experienced side for the opening match of the inaugural Nations Championship against Argentina in Córdoba. The new format sees a bit of globe trotting with “away” fixtures against South Africa and Fiji also in July – albeit the Fiji test will be in Edinburgh.

The two British & Irish Lions are among the first names on the teamsheet and feel well deserved. Schoeman has become a fixture in the front row since making his debut in 2021, while Cummings continues his return to full fitness after injury disrupted much of his Lions tour.

There are few surprises in the pack. Schoeman starts alongside Ewan Ashman and Elliot Millar Mills, with Cummings partnering the long lost Jonny Gray in the second row. Is it an indictment of Scotland’s second row stocks, or saving some heft for the Springboks the weekend after? Behind them, Townsend sticks with the back row that finished the Six Nations, as Matt Fagerson and Rory Darge flank Jack Dempsey who will be off to Japan after the summer.

The half-back pairing sees Ben White continue at scrum-half, while Tom Jordan gets an opportunity at fly-half. Jordan’s performances have grown steadily in a Scotland shirt and another strong showing against a tough side would do his claims no harm in the absence of Finn Russell, who is carrying a calf injury.

Sione Tuipulotu captains the side from inside centre, with Rory Hutchinson outside him following his Premiership-winning campaign with Northampton. Out wide, it is an all-Glasgow Warriors affair as Kyle Steyn and Jamie Dobie start on the wings, with Kyle Rowe completing the back three at full-back.

Glasgow hooker Gregor Hiddleston is in line for his Scotland debut after breaking into the matchday 23 for the first time. It marks another step in what has been a rapid rise over the past 12 months and suggests Townsend is beginning to look beyond the established options at hooker to build out depth in a position where inconsistency seems to happen a lot.

Rory Sutherland, Zander Fagerson and Alex Samuel provide experienced cover up front, while Gregor Brown and George Horne return after injury. Fergus Burke is also among the replacements, a year on from making his first Scotland start on last summer’s tour, with recent Barbarians and GB 7s call-up Darcy Graham completing the squad.

Scotland have often found Argentina difficult opponents away from home and will want to make amends for the most recent capitulation when they met. It’s an odd mix that feels more “summer tour development” than “rankings at stake” (so who knows how France will treat the event).

With two Lions reaching personal milestones and a debut potentially waiting for Hiddleston, it feels like a side selected to make a fast start to a competition Scotland will be keen to make their mark on.

  1. Good to see Kyle Rowe getting picked. Hopefully Dobie goes well on the wing. Having Fergus Burke and Tom Jordan fighting to backup/replace Finn is a good place to be.

In the forwards, surprised to see J Gray back. How’s his end of season been? If he’s the J Gray of years gone by that would be awesome for the squad. Starting pack plus bench looks good.

I can’t work out what a good summer looks like this year. Argentina away is a tough game. SA away is almost impossible, Fiji, even at Murrayfield, won’t be easy.

Is it hope for 2/3 but happy with 1/3?

And it doesn’t get any easier in November!

    1. Still not convinced about playing Dobie on the wing endlessly, he needs time to develop at 9 as our next best player there once White (28) and Horne (31) retire from Test rugby… Darcy may be rested for the Boks I guess.

    2. Dobie didn’t go well , as he’s not an international class winger and certainly won’t compete against S.A , he’s a very dangerous 9 though.

  2. Argentina are a class side but interestingly haven’t really made their home turf a fortress like other nations have. We have a reasonable record at their place over the years and a mediocre England side won their series last summer fairly convincingly. We have seen before that the fast pitch suits our attacking game and so you never know.
Unlikely as it is I’d still like to see Franco take over after the summer but 2 wins from 3 this summer would likely give Townsend some breathing room.

  3. by no means perfect, but thought that was a great win nonetheless. Plenty of good performances but thought skipper was terrific

  4. Very impressed with Hutchinson and Rowe. At times the backs really fizzed. Players who have grown over the last 2 years – Ben White and Ewan Ashman. Forwards have a massive taks next week, but they looked cohesive and determined.

  5. I’ll admit, my memory isn’t what it was, but I’m struggling to remember as dominant an away performance as that against a top tier nation. Honestly, never felt like the result was in doubt. We bossed the scrum (didn’t see that coming) and our backs were outstanding.

Key to the back play was the captain. When Sione is able to break the gain line as regularly as that, our outside backs have it on easy street – and we have the options out wide to really take advantage of those opportunities. Sione was immense, as was Rowe and Hutchinson. But really, the only one of our backs that didn’t shine as brightly was Dobie, and he’s not long back from injury so gets a pass (even if I’ve come round to the view that he’s best used at scrum half).

Was a little disappointed by the brain farts at the end. They made a rout look respectable, and gifted Argentina a bonus point they didn’t deserve. South Africa will obviously be a massive step up, and I think we’re all expecting the Boks to win handily. Still, the Argentina result should give the boys a bit of pep in their step. Could have been even more positive if we hadn’t given away those cheap points towards the end…. c’est la vie and all that.

    1. I thought it looked a little in doubt for the first ten minutes! But after that, once we settled in, Scotland were in control. Could have done without the couple of soft tries at the end, which flattered Argentina, but at least it livened up the atmosphere.

  6. I was trying to be positive in my first post but agree with subsequent comments, I’m also not convinced by Dobie as an international wing (yet, he may get there). I’m surprised to see him starting again and feel we’ll miss the change of pace that bringing on Hornito might have given us for the last 20. I’d have started Darcy with Horne/Jordan on the bench.

But that might be why I’m not an international rugby coach!

Hopefully we can hold our own physically against an awesome Boks side. They’ve made a few changes from the England match but it just shows their strength in depth and doesn’t look any easier a prospect for the changes.
