Podcast: Episode 135 – Oceans Apart

This week’s podcast is being split into two episodes discussing the issues raised in the Oceans Apart documentary currently available through Amazon Prime.

In the first part of the podcast, Iain Hay talks to documentary film maker and CEO of Pacific Rugby Players Welfare, former Samoa International Dan Leo. Iain and Dan discuss the issues raised in the film as well as solutions which would provide a level playing field for Tier 2 nations and more protections for Pacific Island players.

In part two, Cammy, Iain and John follow up on Iain’s interview by discussing the issues brought up in the Oceans Apart documentary and asking what more can be done to resolve some of the big issues at the top of World Rugby.

Is the current system open to corruption? Are finances being distributed fairly? How can we stop the exploitation of players? Are the current eligibility rules fit for purpose?

The documentary is a warts and all look at the significant contribution Pacific Island players have made to Rugby Union since its inception as well as their treatment at the hands of World Rugby and their own home Unions.

  1. Well done, treatment of an actual rugby issue. An admirable individual highlighting real problems and solutions.

  2. A really good documentary and staggering the share of the votes that Tier 1 nations have in World Rugby. Worrying how mismatched everything is and the exploitation of young players wanting to support their families (and villages). If rugby is going to be a sport of values, they need to address the issues raised (properly!) Scotland gets credit for at least touring but much much more can be done!
