Podcast: Episode 63 – Welsh Dragon Bar

This week Cammy is joined by Iain and Rory to look at the latest proposal for a World Rugby Championship, TV rights for the Six Nations and some reluctant chat about the loss to Wales and upcoming game against England at Twickenham. We also get deep into class war territory and Iain tells us about his favourit pub in Wellington.

We’re also looking for our listeners to get involved in the comments on this page and elsewhere on the blog: “Hands in the ruck” – What’s had it’s hands in your ruck? Let us know in the comments and we’ll pick out the best ones. “Absolute Bobbins” – Have you or anyone you know got a seemingly ridiculous opinion on something rugby related? Let us know and we will happily sit in judgement. “Crap call offs” – Send us your crap reasons for teammates and players for not coming to training or calling off before a game. “Where’s Dougie Donnelly?” – It’s now mandatory to have a rumours section in a rugby podcast (apparently) so we’re looking for yours as well as news of any Scottish sporting media personalities you’ve spotted out and about. Have you seen Dougie Vipond down Tesco? Has your uncle’s brother’s aunt’s friend heard from someone down the pub that Jonny Gray is getting a new fence put in? Has your plumber been doing some work round Murrayfield and seen Richard Cockerill taking delivery of a new yoga mat? If so then let us know. If you want to get in touch you can e-mail us on podcast[at]scottishrugbyblog.co.uk, catch us on Twitter @ScotRugbyBlog or @CammyBlack or you can leave a comment below and we’ll pick it up there. World League proposals come with a £5bn carrot. Interesting to find out how this will break down in terms of distribution (it is not going to be split equally 12 ways that is for sure) across the 12 years and what it means in terms of 6N being in free to air (which should be a red line).

What is clear is that it risks hugely undermining the 6N, the RWC and rugby in scotland.

6N – in world league proposals a grand slam winner might not even qualify for the world league final, so the 6N becomes a mere first stage of a more prestigious tournament. Conversely, a team could get the wooden spoon but finish above another 6N side in the league table. Who gets relegated?

RWC – what is the point? It will be much easier to win than the World League, whist winners will be de facto word champions. Just look at how irrelevant the 7s World Cup is in the shadow of the World Series. Problem for World Rugby is the RWC showcases T2 sides and without it they will be rightly accused of cutting those sides adrift.

Scotland – World League to be introduced in 2022 when we play Italy in Rome. Relegation means exclusion from 6N for two years and fatally undermined our pro-sides. Can rugby in Scotland seriously survive without games against home unions? Can SRU sell out Murrayfield for Scotland v Spain? Relegation will happen to us sooner or later and every season will be an existential threat. Dodson needs to kill this in committee.

    Fantasy 6 nations update

    Happy with 18th Place.

However, I think mass disqualifications are in order as nobody in the top 12 teams has more than 1 Scottish player (and many have none)!

Full disclosure, I only had McInally.
