Podcast: Episode 57 – Rugby Centipede

Podcast

This week Cammy is joined by John and Rory to preview the Six Nations and look back at Edinburgh and Glasgow’s European fortunes. We chat live with the Scottish Rugby Forum and Rory puts some unsettling images in our minds.

We’re also looking for our listeners to get involved in the comments on this page and elsewhere on the blog:

“Hands in the ruck” – What’s had it’s hands in your ruck? Let us know in the comments and we’ll pick out the best ones.

“Absolute Bobbins” – Have you or anyone you know got a seemingly ridiculous opinion on something rugby related? Let us know and we will happily sit in judgement.

“Crap call offs” – Send us your crap reasons for teammates and players for not coming to training or calling off before a game.

“Where’s Dougie Donnelly?” – It’s now mandatory to have a rumours section in a rugby podcast (apparently) so we’re looking for yours as well as news of any Scottish sporting media personalities you’ve spotted out and about. Have you seen Dougie Vipond down Tesco? Has your uncle’s brother’s aunt’s friend heard from someone down the pub that Jonny Gray is getting a new fence put in? Has your plumber been doing some work round Murrayfield and seen Richard Cockerill taking delivery of a new yoga mat? If so then let us know.

If you want to get in touch you can e-mail us on podcast[at]scottishrugbyblog.co.uk, catch us on Twitter @ScotRugbyBlog or @CammyBlack or you can leave a comment below and we’ll pick it up there.

  1. Regarding Ireland in the 6N – there would also be a massive psychological boost going into the World Cup if we could beat them (or stay very close at least) this year. Shame the game isn’t later on when we might have a few more players back, but they will be missing a few as well and the England game will be very physical for them the week before.

  2. Story of the six nations – Owen Farrell getting yellow-carded for a no-arms tackle and Eddie Jones telling his players to leave the field in response.

  3. Good blog, thanks.

    Box kicks-it’s quite simple:

They work when we are playing Ireland and Wales -especially- but unfortunately they only work for the opposition and never for us. A box kick from a Scottish team invariably results in possession for the other team or us being penalized. A box kick taken by us invariably results in an injury to one of our players, a penalty, or the loss of possession in the context. And the amount of time it takes to set them up-talk about losing the element of surprise-if I never saw another one again I would be happy.

  4. Just going to put this here as I can’t think of somewhere better….

In the sevens, Scotland pulled off a fantastic second half comeback after going down 21-0 to France early on. Finished 26-21.
Good balance of old 7s pros and young guys that we will probably see for Edinburgh/Glasgow (and potentially Scottish 15s team) in next couple of years.

    1. 2nd game – solid win over a weak Kenya side.
3rd game – outclassed by SA. Multiple turnovers at tackle as SA competing for everything, need to tighten up on the support against teams like this.

Still, overall successful day 1. New Zealand in the next round I think…..

England and Wales fail to qualify

  5. Hands in the ruck – Gatland for the Lions, again. Please for the love of Christ, FO.

  6. Day 2 Sevens

Went well behind USA in the first half (again!). Impressive comeback in the second, just denied at the end by a somewhat dubious penalty for holding a player off the ball.

Good wins against Australia and Samoa to secure 5th overall – a decent result.

Defeated by the Bulls 26-19, the Warriors will need to re-group with play-offs imminent
In front of an expectant crowd of over 5000 fans, Scotland put one of their more underwhelming performances of the past couple of years, as they failed to grasp the initiative against a fired up and fizzing Italy team.
