The New 2017-18 Macron Scotland Rugby Kit: the verdict

Scottish Rugby Macron
2017/2018 Scottish Rugby kits from Macron

So with the dust now settled on another Scotland Rugby Kit launch by Macron, official kit sponsors of Scottish Rugby until 2021, we thought we’d take a closer look at the shirts and
the fans opinions on them!

The kit was unveiled back on the 10th July and, much like a British & Irish Lions team selection, it completely polarised Scottish Rugby fans.

This year’s shirt features purple flashes not seen since the Cotton Oxford and Canterbury jerseys of the late ninety’s and early 2000’s.

The purple makes a welcome return in our opinion (it brings some colour to the navy-heavy shop floor) however it seems to split opinion on social media along with the collar style (or lack of) and the tartan being dropped completely, a touch that proved a popular addition by Macron on the last two shirt incarnations.

Hopefully the tartan will make a return for the Rugby World Cup in 2019, but if you really miss it there is a training top with some on it.

The shorts will also be navy blue for the coming season, something that always incenses traditionalists who prefer white, “the way its always been!”. However, with the keyboard warriors out in force throughout the launch, we decided we would conduct our own polls on Twitter and Facebook to gauge what the more reclusive social media user thinks.

On Facebook we conducted a 4-hour long live video inviting opinions. As you can see below the shirts were overwhelmingly “liked” but as for “loved” and “hated”: in largely equal measure.

Over on Twitter it proved a more negative place to be, echoing Ed Sheeran’s thoughts on the platform. Here, 41% hate the shirt with only a minority of 15% loving the design. A small majority of 44% still like it though.

Will these opinions effect shirt sales? We doubt it, because Scottish rugby fans are a passionate bunch, and this patriotism usually leads to plenty of new jerseys in the BT Murrayfield stands come game day. The thistle on the chest and the sense of getting behind your team is more than enough justification for a purchase of any rugby shirt in our opinion.

  1. All the Macron shirts have been at least decent, and this is no exception… Although not hitting the heights of the RWC efforts….

The big problem with Macron though is that the shirts change so frequently.. We lost to Italy in that red shirt above while they were wearing the adidas top they just replaced…. Wales still have the same top as they had last World Cup too.

  2. From what I understand Macron has been a commercially savvy move by the SRU which is a welcome change to see us be able to identify a more profitable business decision and capitalise.

I thought the traditional simplicity of the first shirt was perfect and he following designs have been appropriately explorative, including the new design.

I agree though that they seem to be releasing too many new kits which leaves a rather souring taste of taking advantage of loyal fans, then again we need to give the SRU all the financial support we can as long as they’re getting the most out of Macron.

What I really like about the Macron/SRU collection is though, that no other international rugby sides have taken them on (as far as I know), and we were the first. It sets a precident that we are free thinkers both on and off the field. For too long has Scottish rugby been ‘another one of the home nations’ under the Canterbury brand. Loved the old Pringle shirts but I guess that’s not possible anymore.

My only advice to Macron is to not get carried away! The Scots find comfort and pride in the plain dark blue, and white shorts too!

  3. Although it’s not something to get upset about, I think this is by far the least desirable of the strips from Macron. Lose the grandad collar and armbands – oh aye, basically like the last one…

  4. La Rochelle to be signing Tom Brown from Edinburgh within the week on a 4 year contract.

  5. Ive recently got into a habit of swapping my Scotland tops that I’ve hoarded over the years with opposition fans after games (inebriated I should add). As such I now have no Scotland top, as was therefore awaiting the new kit with anticipation. Unfortunely it’s utterly vile, and I am now desperately looking for old kits online. Just my luck that Macron would release its first stinker when I’m in need! The 2013/14/15 kit was perfection; shame it’s tarnished with us “winning” a Spoon with it…

Plain dark blue top, white collar, plain white socks, dark blue socks. Nothing else. This is what I want for our RWC2019 triumph. Captain Johnny Gray would look quite fetching in it as he lifts the Webb Ellis Cup, don’t you agree?

    1. Johnny Gray wont captain scotland , there are better leaders and better players , he really need to work on his ball carrying to cement his place as first choice with some of the upcoming locks. Personally id rate Scott Cummings to be ahead of him after this RWC
